Program funding and costs
Studying abroad can look expensive, but as a La Trobe student you have access to mobility grants and scholarships that can help. All eligible students will receive at least the mobility grant but may be able to receive funding of higher value from La Trobe or external sources instead of or in addition to the mobility grant.
There are funds available from Learning Abroad for both semester exchange and overseas short programs.
Semester exchange funding
Main scholarships
The Mobility Grant is the minimum amount of funding you will receive when approved for the La Trobe semester exchange program. All other Main Scholarships of higher value will replace the Mobility Grant. If you are eligible for more than one scholarship, you will receive the one with the highest value. With the exception of the Mobility Grant, you can only receive a Main Scholarship once within your current La Trobe degree.

- The payment process takes approximately 3 - 4 weeks after the confirmation of your enrolment at the host university.
- Some mobility grants may be deducted from a La Trobe program cost instead of being paid to students.
Terms and Conditions

Vice Chancellor's Access Scholarships - $7,000

The Vice Chancellor Access (VCA) Scholarship provides financial support to eligible exchange students who may not otherwise have the funds to participate in an overseas study experience. If you have been awarded a Vice Chancellor's Access Scholarship you may be eligible to receive one of 16 VCA Scholarships valued at $7,000 to participate in a semester exchange program.
Eligibility
- Eligible exchange students who can demonstrate financial hardship and have been awarded a Vice Chancellor's Access Scholarship.
How to apply
Students are required to submit an expression of interest addressing each of the following points:
- Briefly describe your academic and career goals and explain why you are committed to your chosen area of study (200 words)
- Briefly describe your interest in the host university and/or destination you plan to study in and explain how this opportunity will enhance your academic and personal growth (200 words)
- Briefly describe any leadership roles you have held in the past and explain how you have demonstrated leadership qualities such as initiative, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving (200 words)
- Provide any additional information that you believe is relevant to your application, such as financial need, personal challenges or other circumstances that have impacted your academic progress. (200 words)

For Payment
- VCA Scholarship is paid via electronic transfer to your nominated bank account once your program has commenced and your completed On Arrival Form has been received by the Learning Abroad team. Payment takes approximately three to four weeks.
Terms and Conditions
- Students completing a second exchange semester are not eligible to receive the Vice Chancellor Access Scholarship
- The semester exchange program must be approved by the Learning Abroad team
- Students are only eligible for one VCA Scholarship during their LTU degree.
- The VCA Scholarship can be combined with the Sheffield Hallam University Grant and East China Normal University Grant.
New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant up to $7,000

Learning Abroad receives funding from the Australian government for semester exchanges under the New Colombo Plan (NCP) funding scheme for select countries within the Indo-Pacific region.
Eligibility
- Apply for a semester exchange in one of the selected countries.
- Be an Australian citizen enrolled at La Trobe University.
- Aged between 18 and 28, with capacity to include some students over 28.
- Undertaking a Bachelor or Bachelor Honours degree program onshore at an Australian La Trobe University campus.
Selection Criteria
- Recipients will be determined based on eligibility for the La Trobe exchange program and selection criteria under the NCP Program.
- Students who have a WAM higher than 70% will be prioritised.

- Apply for a semester exchange at one of the selected countries.
For payment
- NCP Mobility Grant is paid via electronic transfer to your nominated bank account once your program has commenced and your completed On Arrival Form has been received by LTA (please refer to the arrival information page for more information).
- The payment process takes approximately 3 - 4 weeks after the confirmation of your enrolment at the host university.
Terms and Conditions
- Grant availability are conditional on the allocation of government funding.
Sheffield Hallam - $4,000
La Trobe students participating in semester exchange at Sheffield Hallam University will receive a one-off mobility grant to the value of $4000 instead of the $2000 mobility grant. For more information, please email studyabroad@latrobe.edu.au
New Colombo Plan (NCP) Scholarship
The New Colombo Plan Scholarship awards up to $69,000 to Australian undergraduate students for study and work experience opportunities across multiple locations in the Indo-Pacific region for up to 19 months.

Eligibility
- Participate in an exchange program in one of the NCP specified countries.
- Be an Australian citizen enrolled at La Trobe University.
- Undertaking a Bachelor or Bachelor Honours degree program onshore at an Australian La Trobe University campus.
- Aged between 18 and 28 years of age (inclusive) on 1 January 2024.
- Be involved with local community by way of volunteering or other initiatives.
Selection criteria
- Recipients will be determined based on eligibility for the La Trobe exchange program and selection criteria under the Australian Government NCP Program.
- Students who have a WAM higher than 70% will be prioritised.
How to apply
- Complete a expression of interest before May 31, 2023.
- NCP Scholarship application is a separate process to the La Trobe exchange program.

Aspire Grant and Vice Chancellor's Excellence Scholarship

- Specify at time of completing your online application for the La Trobe exchange program. Provide proof of acceptance into the Aspire Program
For payment
- Aspire Grant is paid via electronic transfer to your nominated bank account once your program has commenced and your completed On Arrival Form has been received by the Learning Abroad team (please refer to the arrival information page for more information).
- The payment process takes approximately 3 - 4 weeks after the confirmation of your enrolment at the host university.
Terms and Conditions

- The payment process takes approximately 3 - 4 weeks after the confirmation of your enrolment at the host university.

Hallym International Dormitory Program, Hallym University Korea

What is the Hallym International Dormitory (HID)?
Hallym International Dormitory (HID) is an intensive language and culture program in Hallym University. Hallym students who are interested in developing their language and cultural understanding, live and study together with visiting exchange students.
What is the role of exchange student tutors?
As an exchange student tutor, you will be required to:
- Attend 2 hours of lecture per week. The lectures focus on developing understanding of current issues through student-driven discussions. The work is designed to encourage students to look at topics and issues in new ways from a different cultural perspective.
- Host 2 hours of seminar per week. Seminars are held during the evenings in which groups of 5-7 students work in teams on a variety of lecture related work and language development.
- Attend a small number of events throughout the semester that all students are encouraged to attend.
What are the benefits of living in HID?
- Free accommodations for the whole semester (valued at 724,00won).
- A scholarship ranging from 300,000 won to 600,000 won. The final amount depends on an assessment of your participation in the program.

Walter Mangold Language Scholarships

The Walter Mangold Language Scholarships are available to full-time students of modern languages, who are approved, or in the process of applying for a language exchange or study abroad semester overseas.
A Language Scholarship offers students amounts up to $20,000 toward travel and living expenses while they are enrolled in an approved, accredited language and cultural program for one or two semesters.
Interested candidates should consult the The Walter Mangold Trust Fund website and all enquiries should be via email.

You can apply once you have been accepted into the La Trobe exchange program and your subjects have been pre-approved for credit.

Please note:
- To be eligible you must have completed 120 credit points of study in a Commonwealth supported place and have at least 15 credit points of study remaining when you return. Be sure to check your eligibility.
- Advanced standing/credits from a previous degree or external qualification must have been completed in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) to count towards the completed Equivalent Full-Time Study Load (EFSTL) requirement of 120 credit points.
- La Trobe Abroad does not administer or review OS-Help Loan processes.
- OS-HELP is only available for domestic Undergraduate Commonwealth Supported Students, and some Postgraduate coursework Commonwealth Supported students.
Application dates
For study overseas on exchange programs in Semester 1 or summer break of any given year, please ensure you submit your application by 1 November in the previous semester.
For study overseas on exchange programs in Semester 2 or winter break of any given year, please ensure you submit your application by 1 May in the previous semester.
Applications for OS-Help loans for study tours, some short courses or clinical/professional placements will be accepted at any time but may not be reviewed immediately. Allow up to a minimum of 6 weeks before departure for the application to be assessed.
Centrelink

Domestic students who receive youth allowance or other government funding may continue to receive these benefits when overseas. If you are currently not receiving Centrelink, you may be eligible to apply to receive funds during your semester overseas. Please make enquiries with Centrelink directly.
You can apply for the Centrelink payment after you have provided your confirmed subjects (as confirmed by your host university) to the GECA team.
To apply, students need to use the signed GECA approval letter (sent to students once their subjects are approved) to send to Centrelink as proof of their approval to continue their study overseas.
You can then liaise directly with Centrelink to request payment while studying full-time overseas on semester exchange.
Please note: Neither the Learning Abroad team nor La Trobe University administers or reviews Centrelink processes.

Insurance cover for non-LTU approved activity is limited to no more than the total of Study days of an approved LTU activity. (Eg if the Overseas program is 14 days duration, you are only covered for 14 days of personal travel. (Maximum insurance is 1 year). You are strongly advised to purchase your own travel insurance for any additional days of non-LTU approved activity.

Short Program funding
Main grants offered
Grant payments are usually received 1-3 weeks before the program begins, if the full Overseas Short Program (OSP) application documents are received on time. Please note: the grant policy states that students will only receive one form of funding - mobility grants or Australian Government grants.

- If your program requires you to pay up-front fees or deposits prior to your program commencement, it is important that you seek alternative funding to cover these costs in the meantime.
- If you do not receive your money within the payment period, you can email us to follow-up for the status.

PG Research Students
Please add to your OSP Application:
- A one-page statement explaining how the overseas program will impact your research and list any other funding you are receiving.
- A letter of support from your Supervisor must also be included and they should sign your OSP form as well.
- Some form of evidence from the Graduate Research School (GRS) must be received by La Trobe Abroad indicating you have completed their travel process. Applications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis for $500 mobility grants and will depend on available funding.
