Information for current La Trobe University scholarship holders

If you currently hold a scholarship or you have recently received an offer for a scholarship from La Trobe University, there's some things that are important for you to know.

The information on this page refers to domestic, non-research scholarships only. It does not apply to:

Generally, multiple scholarships cannot be held at the same time. If the University knows, or has reason to believe, that you provided false or misleading information on your scholarship application the University may review your application and terminate your scholarship.

La Trobe University scholarship terms and conditions

By accepting scholarship payments at La Trobe, you are agreeing to the terms and conditions of that award as outlined below. As a binding legal document that outlines your obligations, it's important you read and understand the terms and conditions of your scholarship.

Your scholarship offer is based on your enrolment in the course and campus stated in your offer letter. Any changes to either your course and/or campus may result in immediate termination of your scholarship.

Your scholarship is awarded on the condition that you maintain enrolment in your course at La Trobe University. The scholarship is awarded for the normal full-time duration of the course you are enrolled in at the time you accept the scholarship.

Students are only permitted to hold one La Trobe scholarship at a time. If your scholarship has additional terms that are specific to that scholarship, they will be listed in your scholarship offer.

The yearly value of your scholarship is outlined in your scholarship offer. Scholarships are usually paid for the normal full-time duration of the course in which you are first enrolled.   Any variation to this will be outlined in your scholarship offer.

Your scholarship yearly payment is usually split between Semester 1 and Semester 2 instalments. These payments are processed following confirmation of your continued eligibility after the semester census dates.

Payments will be processed into your nominated bank account up to 10 business days from your eligibility being confirmed for the payment period.

For most scholarships, your first payment will be paid in two parts. You will receive 50% of your first payment as an early payment at the start of your first semester to help you get set up for your studies, with the remaining 50% to be paid within 10 working days after Semester 1 census date, provided you have a full-time study load.  Any variation to the early payment will be outlined in your scholarship offer.

It is your responsibility to contact the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and Centrelink for advice regarding the taxation and social security payment implications of the scholarship. We encourage you to check whether the payments you are receiving are classified as taxable income. Please visit ATO’s Is My Scholarship Taxable? page for further information.

Your yearly scholarship payments as indicated in your scholarship offer are calculated on the basis that you are a full-time student in your La Trobe course.

If you enrol as a part-time student, you will be paid at a 50% pro-rata rate for each semester that you are enrolled part-time. You can check our definitions of study load to determine if you are a full-time or part-time student.

Your rate of scholarship payments will be determined by the amount of credit points you are enrolled in after Semester 1 and 2 census dates. Some scholarships do not allow part-time studies, and this will be outlined in your scholarship offer.

Scholarship offers cannot be deferred. If you would like to be considered for an access or equity scholarship, please apply before the year you plan to commence study.  Applications are open through VTAC in August to October each year.

If your course allows you to take a Leave of Absence (LoA), most scholarships can also be placed on leave. Your scholarship payments will be placed on hold while you are on leave and then resume in the study period in which you return to your studies. We recommend speaking with a Student Advisor to explore your options if you are considering taking leave.  If your scholarship does not allow you to take leave, this will be outlined in your offer letter.

Bursaries and other one-off payments will not be paid if you defer or take a leave of absence.

Some scholarships are attached to a particular course, discipline, and/or campus and therefore not transferable.  Your scholarship and continued scholarship payments are based on meeting these eligibility requirements.

If the scholarship is not attached to a particular course, discipline or campus, a transfer may be possible.  Please contact the Scholarships Team to confirm.

If transferring to a different course extends the duration of your studies, your scholarship will only be paid for the duration of the original course.

Scholarships awarded by La Trobe University are not transferrable to a different institution or third party providers.

If your scholarship offer is based on merit and/or lists a requirement for you to have a level of Weighted Average Mark (WAM) or maintain satisfactory academic progress and you do not meet the requirement during a study period, you will be contacted to discuss your academic progress. Failure to engage with supports and repeated unsatisfactory progress may lead to your scholarship being suspended or terminated.

We recommend accessing Academic Recovery supports if you feel that you may be at risk of not making satisfactory progress.

Scholarships may be suspended or terminated if you are found to be in breach of any of the terms and conditions of your scholarship.

Termination reasons include:

  • If you do not resume study at the conclusion of a period of Leave of Absence or do not meet all University and Government administrative requirements
  • You are found to have committed serious academic misconduct or general misconduct
  • If you have been made an incorrect scholarship offer as determined by La Trobe at its sole discretion
  • You are found to be in receipt of a government and/or external scholarship

If a scholarship or bursary has been made available to you via the generosity of a donor, there are a few requirements you must meet:

  • You must reply to your scholarship or bursary offer with a short message of thanks to the donor that we can share with them.
  • You may be required to provide a brief written report to the donor at the end of the year, detailing your activities and progress in your course.
  • You may be required to attend joint promotional events or activities in keeping with the spirit of the scholarship as reasonably required between the donor and the University.
  • You must maintain satisfactory academic progression.

Your offer letter will state if it is funded by a donor. If it does not state that it is supplied by the generosity of a donor, you are not required to meet these terms and conditions.

The Destination Australia Scholarship was awarded on the condition that the recipient maintains a full-time enrolment in a course that is offered in its entirety at that regional campus of La Trobe University.  There are a number of specific terms and conditions which must be met and these will will be outlined in your scholarship offer. This scholarship is unfortunately no longer offered.
