Privacy collection notice for employees
La Trobe University complies with the provisions of the Privacy Data and Protection Act 2014 (Vic), the Health Records Act 2001 (Vic) and the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) in its handling of personal and health information.
This Privacy Collection Notice applies to personal and health information that the University collects via phone, paper based and electronic formats throughout the employment process.
The primary purpose for collecting the information is to administer your employment, salary and entitlements, maintain your employee record and for the provision of associated services such as ICT, parking, memberships, and to meet the legislative requirements of the University.
The University takes all reasonable steps to protect personal information held in its possession against loss, unauthorised access, use, modification, disclosure or misuse.
Disclosure of personal information
An employee’s personal information collected will only be used for the outlined purpose and may be disclosed to organisations such as superannuation schemes, government departments, contracted service providers and other relevant bodies when required and authorised to do so by law.
The University may also disclose your personal information to third parties with your consent and/or in emergency situations, if it is reasonably necessary to lessen or prevent a serious threat to an individual’s life, or the public’s safety.
Consequences if personal information is not provided
If you choose not to provide the requested personal information to the University, then it may not be possible for the University to process or assess your application, entitlements and/or obligations in respect to your employment.
Access of personal information
Subject to any exceptions in relevant laws, an employee has a right to access their personal information. Access to and correction of personal information is undertaken in accordance with the provisions in the Freedom of Information Act 1982.
Prospective employees should discuss any concerns with your recruitment contact and should be noted as part of your application.
