Software Site Licenses
Site licenses provide you with easier and cost-effective access to software that can support your research.
Digital Research provides institutional licenses to software packages to make access easier and more cost-effective. The use of these packages by La Trobe staff and students is for research purposes.
Use the button below to submit a software request if you need access to the following packages: Dragon, Geneious Prime, Leximancer, MATLAB, Origin Pro, SPSS, and STATA statistical packages.
Further details about these packages are available in the sections below.
Geneious Prime is a comprehensive suite of molecular biology and sequence analysis tools for genomics research. The Geneious Academy provides free unlimited access to online courses about Geneious and key concepts in molecular biology and bioinformatics.
Leximancer analyses text documents to identify the high-level concepts, the key ideas, and the actionable insights you need with interactive visualizations and data exports. Support, including webinars, resources and training, is available from the Leximancer website using the ‘Support’ menu option.
La Trobe University has an institutional license for which researchers can request access using the Software Request button above.
MATLAB is an interactive system for matrix-based computation designed for scientific and engineering use. It is good for many forms of numeric computation and visualization. Besides dealing with explicit matrices in linear algebra, it can handle differential equations, polynomials, signal processing, and other applications. Results can be made available both numerically and as graphics.
MATLAB is useful for any discipline that works with numbers, including Engineering, Economics, Computer Science, Geosciences, Physics, etc.
MATLAB can be installed on any computer on the La Trobe Campus using the Software Center application. This provides access to the latest supported version of MATLAB and many toolboxes and associated software.
Staff and Students are also licensed to use MATLAB on personal computers. However, commercial usage of MathWorks products is not permitted by this site license.
Origin Pro is a software application for data analysis and publication-quality graphing, tailored to the needs of scientists and engineers. The application offers an easy-to-use interface for beginners, and the ability for advanced users to customize analysis and graphing tasks using themes, templates, custom reports, batch processing and programming.
Origin Pro is available to download onto your La Trobe computer via the Software Center.
SPSS is a widely used program for statistical analysis in social science. It is also used by market researchers, health researchers, survey companies, government, education researchers, marketing organizations, data miners and others.
Stata is a complete, integrated software package that provides all your data science needs, including:
- data manipulation
- visualization
- statistics
- automated reporting
Other Software
Information about other software packages, including how to access a licence (if required), is available below.
ArcGIS is a suite consisting of a group of geographic information system (GIS) software products produced by Esri. Use this software to create, manage and share geographic data, maps, and analytical models.
Documentation and guided lessons in using ArcGIS are available from the website using the button below.
It can be installed on your La Trobe computer using the Software Center application.
ChemOffice Professional is an integrated suite of scientifically intelligent productivity tools that enables researchers to capture, store, retrieve and share data and information on compounds, reactions, materials, and their properties.
These tools help chemists and biologists to efficiently keep track of their work, visualize and gain a deeper understanding of their results and correlate biological activity with chemical structures.
It can be installed on your La Trobe computer using the Software Center application.
EndNote is a reference manager that helps you save time formatting citations. It moves you through the research process as you search, organize, write, publish, and share.
It can be installed on your La Trobe computer using the Software Center application.
LabVIEW, from National Instruments (NI), is a graphical programming environment used by millions of engineers and scientists. It is used to develop sophisticated measurement, test, and control systems from intuitive graphical icons and wires that resemble a flowchart. It offers unrivalled integration with thousands of hardware devices and provides hundreds of built-in libraries for advanced analysis and data visualisation – all for creating virtual instrumentation.
Training and support are available from NI’s education services.
If you want to get an edge by better understanding the explosion of unstructured data in the world today, you need NVivo - powerful software for qualitative data analysis. Whether you are working individually or in a team, on Windows or Mac, are new to research or have years of experience, there's an NVivo option to suit you.
A license for NVivo can be downloaded via the link below and searching for ‘NVivo’. The license lasts for a fixed period but can be renewed by downloading again.
Training tutorials are available on the LinkedIn Learning website.
PRIMER is a software tool for non-parametric multivariate analysis. It can be used to analyze, visualize, and characterize salient patterns in multivariate data.
PRIME v7 can be installed on your La Trobe computer via the Software Center application.
Tutorials and support resources are available from the PRIMER-e website.
RStudio is an integrated development environment for R, a programming language for statistical computing and graphics. It includes a console, syntax-highlighting editor that supports direct code execution, as well as tools for plotting, history, debugging and workspace management.
Both R and RStudio can be installed on your La Trobe computer via the Software Center.
Training is available at La Trobe from the Digital Research and the Statistical Consultancy Platform, both of which are advertised via the RED program.
SBGrid is a major set of up-to-date tools for researchers in genomics, bioinformatics, etc. For installation instructions, webinars and help with using the software, please visit the SBGrid Consortium’s website.
