NGV Triennial (2017/2018)
This vast exhibition traversed cultures, scales and perspectives. Our masterclass and public lectures encouraged audiences to look a little closer.

The inaugural NGV Triennial featured the work of 100+ artists from 32 countries. Held in the summer of 2017/2018, it was a wide-ranging celebration of contemporary art and design practice which spanned all four levels of NGV International.
The exhibition explored innovative technologies, architecture, animation, performance, film, painting, drawing, fashion design, tapestry and sculpture.
Partnership highlights: Art therapy masterclass
As the Learning Partner of the NGV Triennial, we translated the stories and key themes of this exhibition into free public lectures and an exclusive masterclass. These events took a deeper look at how art transforms society, how art has been a form of activism, how artists have influenced urban design and the importance of art in today’s therapy practices.
Our two-day art therapy masterclass brought together experts from La Trobe University’s Art Institute and Master of Art Therapy program to explore connections between Yayoi Kusama’s life and practice and the practice of art-making more generally.
We also ran our annual Summer at the NGV subject, inviting students to study within the walls of the gallery, and hosted a series of public lectures:
- Memory and environment (14 December 2017)
- Shouting from the studio top: The artist as activist (8 February 2018)
- The search for a new civic imagination (15 February 2018).
