The ADVANCE-D Programme: addressing intimate partner violence

While no single factor explains why some people perpetrate intimate partner violence (IPV), substance use is a strong and consistent risk factor. Men with substance use problems are more likely to perpetrate IPV and most likely to reoffend. Despite this, men with substance use problems rarely meet criteria for standard perpetrator programs, and often drop-out when they are referred.

ADVANCE is a targeted perpetrator program for men in the context of substance use, and who are usually excluded from Domestic Abuse Perpetrator Programs. ADVANCE has shown promising findings including reductions in IPV.

The ADVANCE-D Programme including the online training and certification will be showcased. During this seminar, Professor Gilchrist will present:

i) findings on the complex role of substance use (intoxication, craving and withdrawal) on IPV perpetration

ii) the development of the ADVANCE Program, including risk identification and management

iii) the adaptation of ADVANCE for digitally supported delivery (ADVANCE-D)

iv) findings from the feasibility randomised controlled trial of the ADVANCE Group Program compared to treatment as usual, and the non-randomised feasibility study of ADVANCE-D in substance use treatment.

This hybrid seminar will be followed by afternoon tea and an opportunity to network with providers and researchers working in the sector by those attending in person.

About Professor Gilchrist

A Professor in Addictions Healthcare Research at the National Addiction Centre, Kings College, Gail Gilchrist has been a substance use researcher for almost 30 years in the UK, Europe and Australia. Her most recent research focuses on the role of substance use in intimate partner violence (IPV) and developing and testing the ADVANCE Programme to reduce IPV in the context of substance use. Gail currently leads a UK National Institute for Health Research grant to conduct a cluster randomised control trial of the ADVANCE-D Programme with 450 men in probation convicted of IPV who have problems with substance use in the UK.
