Student experience
The Department of Computer Science and Information Technology offers students a vibrant, supportive and industry-led learning environment.
Our students benefit from a multidisciplinary approach that combines industry-relevant content with training in core skills including communication, collaboration and presentation.
At La Trobe University, we have a longstanding commitment to diversity, inclusion and social justice; our students are amongst the most diverse of all Australian universities, and we are committed to providing a learning environment and workplace where all students and staff feel valued, respected and supported to achieve their full potential.
We care about building a connected community that actively champions diversity and inclusion to help people thrive. We achieve this by supporting our people, valuing diverse thinking as a key driver of innovation, and holding ourselves to account in delivering a culture where equity is a way of life.
La Trobe is committed to promoting equal opportunities and support for all students and staff, with a focus on six key pillars: cultural, disability, gender equality, Indigenous, LGBTIQA and life stages.

We want our students to have an excellent experience with us and hope they return as they progress through their professional careers.
Our blended approach to course delivery offers students the flexibility they need to learn at a time and place of their choosing – and at their own pace.
We use a range of different technologies to record lectures and online laboratory practicals, and provide comprehensive reference materials. And, we have online forums where students can engage with academic staff and peers, ask questions and share ideas.
We also meet regularly with our student representatives to ensure that our teaching quality and contributions translate into an outstanding student experience.
Student associations and extensive support services also optimise success and the overall student experience.
Our Industry Based Learning program is sector-leading and an important part of our degrees.
Industry Based Learning is taken as a university subject, so students gain credit towards their degree while also getting the experience they need to join the technology workforce. Some of these projects can be seen at our Engineering and IT Showcase.
We have a long history of placing students in dynamic work environments. Students at our Bundoora and Bendigo campuses spend up to ten months in placements or employment, gaining workplace experience and forming valuable relationships with industry professionals.
Our program is well supported by organisations who understand the benefit of gaining access to the brightest students, many of whom achieve full-time employment with their host organisation upon graduating.
Students are placed in a wide range of organisations including government and non-government sectors, small start-ups and large multi-national companies, in Australia and internationally.
The Department of Computer Science and Information Technology is globally connected and works closely with industry leaders in research and academic exchange.
Our staff and students are encouraged to take a global view of computing and information technologies.
Our international partnerships and opportunities add to the richness of our education programs. Many of our staff work with researchers in Asia, North America and Europe on projects that are transforming computer science and information technology.
Our students have opportunities to take short overseas placements to enhance their learning and professional development.
We also have a joint PhD program with the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, as part of the Asian Smart Cities Research Innovation network. Find out more.
The Department of Computer Science and Information Technology is committed to ensuring our students, staff and academics feel safe, confident and able to achieve their potential.
Better representation of women is one of our key objectives. La Trobe University signed up to the Athena SWAN Charter and received a Science in Australia Gender Equity Bronze Institutional Award in 2019. We are committed to removing barriers to the career progression of women, transgender and gender non-binary staff, and increasing gender diversity in senior roles.
We work closely with industry partners to support staff and students in information technology-related careers. We also have a range of scholarships available for women in Computer Science and Information Technology.
