Biomedicine

Why study biomedicine?

Biomedical students in science lab

How does the human body function when it’s healthy and when it’s affected by disease? What are the underlying causes of disease and how can we improve their diagnosis and treatment? These are the questions you’ll aim to answer as a biomedicine student.

You’ll explore the molecular foundations of disease and study the evolving knowledge of biomedical sciences, researching disorders such as cancer, cardiovascular, infectious and neurodegenerative diseases. As your studies progress beyond foundations in chemistry, biology and research methods, you’ll begin to see the multitude of possibilities that this degree offers.

Your second-year subjects in core areas such as biochemistry and physiology also include electives allowing for specialisation in further disciplines such as anatomy, genetics and microbiology. The inclusion of anatomy and physiology subjects mean you can now consider a pathway into postgraduate studies in allied health fields such as physiotherapy and speech pathology.

As a biomedicine student at La Trobe, you’ll also have access to world-class teaching and research facilities at the $100 million La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS).

Cơ hội nghề nghiệp

Once you graduate you’ll be prepared for diverse roles around the world in areas including education, medical sales, administration, and media and communications in biomedical, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, as well as in hospitals and government departments.

If you choose to pursue further study, you may find employment in fields including data science, dietetics, orthoptics, medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy and speech pathology. This degree also prepares you for postgraduate research.

We also offer single subject study. Visit our short courses page to find out more.

Alternative pathways

We offer several pathways into some of our most popular courses – view your options for pathway entry into biomedicine.

La Trobe offers you many pathway options to your preferred course: via another La Trobe course or campus, another university, TAFE, a single subject or mature-age enrolment. See undergraduate pathways or information for international students for general information about these options.

Cơ hội du học

As a La Trobe student, you can broaden your horizons by studying overseas with one of our global exchange partners. We have partnerships with more than 100 universities in over 30 countries throughout Asia, Europe and North and South America.
