Consumer involvement in diabetes living guidelines
In this project, we brought together consumers with lived experience of diabetes, and guideline researchers to explore how consumers could be best involved in the development of living clinical practice guidelines.
This project was a collaboration between the Centre for Health Communication and Participation and the Australian Living Evidence Consortium.
What are diabetes living guidelines?
Diabetes living guidelines are evidence-based statements that include recommendations to help healthcare professionals and consumers make decisions about diabetes-related healthcare. They are updated as soon as important new research is published to ensure health professionals and consumers have access to the most up-to-date information.
How are “living” guidelines different to “standard” guidelines?
“Living” guidelines are continuously updated whereas “standard” guidelines are updated every three to five years. Continuous updating of living guidelines means there are more regular, ongoing opportunities for consumers to be involved in their development.
What did the project involve?
In August 2020, we convened two online deliberative forums involving both consumers and researchers. During the forums, participants discussed their ideas for optimising consumer involvement in diabetes living guidelines.
The results led to the development of a proposed model of “living engagement” in diabetes living guidelines. You can read about it in the final report:
