La Trobe staff and alumni honoured

La Trobe University congratulates all La Trobe alumni, current and former staff members who were recognised with an Australia Day Award this year.

La Trobe Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar AO said he was delighted to celebrate those outstanding individuals from the La Trobe community whose achievements were recognised in the Australia Day Honours.

“These past and present staff and alumni have had a positive impact on Australian society, in many cases through their remarkable contributions to advancing knowledge in their fields of expertise,” Professor Dewar said.

“Every recipient has made a difference to our world, and I warmly congratulate them on their well-deserved accolade.”

Officer of the Order of Australia (AO)

  • Professor Andrew B Markus AO (alumnus) was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to tertiary education, particularly to the study of Jewish civilisation, as a sociologist and demographer, and to multiculturalism.

Member of the Order of Australia (AM)

  • Professor Margarita M Frederico AM (staff) was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to tertiary education, to social work, and to the not-for-profit sector.
  • Miss Bernadette T Black AM (alumna) was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to youth, to local government, and to the community.
  • Dr Susan J Gaffney AM (former staff) was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to dental professional organisations, and to education.
  • Professor Amanda J Leach AM (alumna) was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to ear disease research, and to Indigenous child health.
  • Mr Michael P Pakakis AM (alumnus) was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to STEM education in Victoria.
  • Mr Peter Selvaratnam AM (alumnus) was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to physiotherapy, and to professional development.

Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM)

  • Mrs Susanne E Course OAM (alumna) was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to conservation and the environment, and to the visual arts.
  • Mrs Julie A Gillick OAM (alumna) was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to education, and to professional associations.
  • The late Dr Jenni Ibrahim OAM (alumna) was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to community health.
  • Ms Kathryn M Mackenzie OAM (alumna) was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to tourism in regional Victoria.
  • Mrs Margot E Spalding OAM (alumna) was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to the community of Bendigo.
  • Mrs Amanda Stephan OAM (alumna) was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to nursing, particularly to child and maternal health.

Conspicuous Service Cross (CSC)

  • Ms Naomi S Van Der Linden CSC (alumna) was awarded a Conspicuous Service Cross (CSC) for outstanding achievement in ethics and leadership development and delivery for the Australian Defence Force as Acting Director of the Centre for Defence Leadership and Ethics.

Australian Police Medal (APM)

  • Ms Joy E Arbuthnot APM (alumna) was awarded an Australian Police Medal (APM) for providing distinguished service to Victoria Police, and to the community, for over 33 years.
