Explore uni life at La Trobe’s Open Day

Thousands of school leavers and those seeking further study will see what university is really like, at La Trobe University’s Bendigo Campus Open Day, from 10am to 3pm on Sunday 25 August.

Visitors will step inside world-class facilities, meet inspiring academics and get a feel for uni life.

They will also find out about the University’s new Regional Benefits Program, providing a financial boost of up to $20,000 for high-achieving regional students who choose to study at La Trobe.

Head of Campus, Rob Stephenson, said this year’s Open Day would offer a chance for school leavers to explore their options, plus inspire mature-agers to consider that longed-for career change.

“It’s never too late, or early, to consider your options for tertiary study,” Mr Stephenson said.

“With our Bendigo campus offering everything from business and IT, to nursing, psychology, allied health and education, there are plenty of academics to talk to, and options to explore.”

“This year’s Open Day is also a great opportunity to tour the campus – including our newly opened state-of-the-art engineering and technology building.

“If you’ve driven past the campus in recent months, you would have seen an impressive four-storey steel and glass structure rising from the ground.

“This is your opportunity to have a look inside – including some modern teaching and research spaces, decked out with cutting-edge equipment from all over the world,” Mr Stephenson said.

The building will be home to students studying industrial engineering, civil engineering, and a range of computer science courses.

La Trobe’s Bachelor of Industrial Engineering equips students with the skills to embrace advanced automation, artificial intelligence, digitalisation and data analytics, across fields including aerospace, electronics, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and agriculture.

Highlights of this year’s Open Day include:

  • Hands-on activities in the paramedicine and nursing simulation wards
  • Meeting some very special campus canines in Australia’s only dog cognition lab
  • Students performance testing athletes from the Bendigo Braves, Bendigo Spirit, Bendigo Pioneers and Bendigo Academy of Sport
  • Sessions on scholarships, fees and HECS, and living on campus
  • Sessions on La Trobe’s medical pathway program and Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical)
  • An Aspire Hub where community volunteers can find out how to receive an early offer, an opportunity to receive a $20,000 scholarship for select students, and other benefits. Applicants can also get feedback on their draft applications, prior to the 31 August deadline
  • Plenty of food options, stilt walkers, Chinese lion dancers, and live music!

Everyone who attends a La Trobe Open Day will also be in the draw for their choice of either two tickets to the 2019 Toyota AFL Grand Final, or the The Nutcracker by the Australian Ballet, plus one night of accommodation in Melbourne. To enter, register for the Open Day planner on the La Trobe website, and then check-in at Open Day.

Mr Stephenson said 2020 is set to be an exciting year to join La Trobe, as the Bendigo Campus completes its $50 million transformation program.

“As well as our new engineering and technology building, we will soon celebrate the completion of our expanded library and student union space,” Mr Stephenson said.

“The new facilities will give students access to high-tech teaching spaces and equipment, as well as modern areas for study and socialising. It’s a really exciting time to be joining La Trobe University."

La Trobe Bendigo offers courses in a wide range of fields, including humanities, visual arts, planning, dentistry, paramedicine, physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, psychology, exercise science, public health, nursing and midwifery, outdoor education, law, criminology, computer science, business, accounting and social work.

The rural medical pathway program offers select students an opportunity to study a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical) in Bendigo, with guaranteed entry into the Doctor of Medicine (Rural) at the University of Melbourne’s Shepparton campus.

Media are welcome to attend on the day.
