Held on the Academic Lawn of the University’s Melbourne campus in Bundoora, soundvision will feature an impressive line-up of Melbourne’s leading bands, local DJs and the world premiere of a specially-commissioned film, ‘Variations on Leonard French,’ created by award-winning composer Tamil Rogeon and renowned filmmaker Paul W Rankin. Tim Ross, well-known comedian, half of the comedic radio duo and former La Trobe student, Merrick and Rosso, will MC the event.
La Trobe University Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar said the event promised to be a wonderful end to celebrations, and the community, staff and students were warmly welcomed to come along.
“We see ourselves as very proudly being a part of the community of northern Melbourne and encourage our friends and neighbours to come along and join our birthday celebrations,” Professor Dewar said.
“This exciting event will embody the spirit of La Trobe and its people, offering a line-up of some of Melbourne’s most impressive up-and-coming artists, musicians and performers. It promises to be an unforgettable experience and will be a great way to round out our 50th year,” he said.
Family events
The event begins with a series of family-friendly activities, including a performance from award winning kids comedy entertainment duo The Listies, roving entertainers, food trucks, bands, lawn games (giant Jenga and giant chess) and lots of giveaways. Entry for all under 18s is free.
Music
The event continues in the evening and features some of Melbourne’s top musical acts including REMI, The Bombay Royale, YEO, GL, Emma Donovan and The Putbacks, the RAah Project as well as some of the city’s best DJs.
Film premiere: Variations on Leonard French
An extraordinary partnership between composer Tamil Rogeon and filmmaker Paul W Rankin has resulted in a new film, Variations on Leonard French, which will receive its world premiere at soundvision.
The film is inspired by the Four Seasons, a set of stained glass panels in the University’s sculpture park, created by celebrated Australian artist Leonard French, who also designed the stained glass ceiling in the great hall of the National Gallery of Victoria. The film will be brought to life by the Australian Youth Orchestra and will be performed at sunset.
Event details
The outdoor concert will run from 4pm on Saturday 18 November and will cater for the whole family. The feature orchestral performance will take place at sunset. Live music will continue until 10.30pm when the La Trobe Student Union will take over with a mix of live music and DJs.
Tickets cost $20.
