Success in Sport Management

Meet Ethan Mulligan, a student in La Trobe's Bachelor of Business, majoring in sport management

Third-year Bachelor of Business student, Ethan Mulligan, has always had a keen interest in the business of sport.

“I chose to major in Sports Management because this is an area that I have always been interested in, particularly event management and sport marketing,” he says.

For Ethan, the best part of the course has been the opportunity to connect with like-minded students and lecturers.

“Creating new friendships with people who share the same values and interests has been great. I’ve also formed close connections with my lecturers, which has helped me to be confident when asking questions about assignments or work.”

Ethan also represented the La Trobe Business School at the 3rd Annual Global Peace Summit in Bangkok, an experience he says he will never forget.

“We got to hear from a range of speakers – from genocide survivors to refugee rights activists – who shared their personal struggles of peace in their home countries and how they have taken action towards creating positive change. It was a wonderful opportunity and an invaluable experience,” says Ethan.

As part of his course, Ethan also did a placement through La Trobe Sport, where he assisted with events, partnerships and facilities.

“This allowed me to gain hands-on experience in the sports industry and to create connections with professionals both at La Trobe and their partners.”

“I learned about the preparation and communication that goes into successful events at La Trobe, such as Orientation Week and UBL games. I also gained confidence by working at events and representing the University.”

“Ultimately, I enjoyed how everyone at La Trobe Sport was so friendly and passionate. It was the perfect environment for placement.”

Ethan says he is keen to put his newfound skills and confidence into practice when he graduates later this year.

“I am hoping to get a foot in the door within the sports industry in Victoria and continue to build my networks in the sector.”
