This week, Professor Joanna Barbousas, Dean of the School of Education, welcomed more than 890 new education students to La Trobe as part of Orientation Week.
“It is an exciting time for education at La Trobe. I’m pleased to welcome our 2024 cohort, including our first group of Nexus students as part of the Master of Teaching (Primary) program.”
“It is so wonderful to see such strong interest in education and we look forward to supporting both new and continuing students on their journey to becoming world-class educators.”
Professor Barbousas said the School of Education is in a unique position when it comes to preparing future educators.
“Recent recommendations from the Grattan Institute Report and Excellence in Teacher Education reforms aim to improve the quality of initial teacher education through a range of measures including evidence-based methodologies, employment-based pathways and industry partnerships."

“Our teacher program is anchored in the latest, evidence-based practices which means that La Trobe education graduates will have the core knowledge needed to be effective and impactful teachers for all learners.”
“We’ve also had more than 10,700 teachers through our Science of Language and Reading (SOLAR) Lab program, helping schools to adopt well-established, scientific approaches to improve how they teach children to read.”
“In addition, our school and industry partnerships have gone from strength to strength over the past few years. We are also looking to grow our partnerships particularly as we grow our Nexus program and extend into the Catholic education sector and New South Wales providers.”
Professor Barbousas said enhancing the student experience within the School while maintaining the quality agenda will be an area of focus in 2024.
