The Centre for Human Security and Social Change mourns the passing of Dorosday Kenneth Watson, an extraordinary leader who played a pivotal role in advancing gender reform in Vanuatu.

The Centre for Human Security and Social Change at La Trobe University and the Developmental Leadership Program (DLP) at the University of Birmingham are deeply saddened at the passing of Dorosday Kenneth Watson, an extraordinary leader who played a pivotal role in advancing gender reform in Vanuatu.

Dorosday's impact on the Vanuatu gender space was profound, notably as the Director of the Department of Women, where she championed equal rights for women and girls. Recognizing her dedication, the French government awarded Dorosday the "Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mérite" in 2012 for her tireless efforts in strengthening women's rights and combating domestic violence. In 2022, the Australian High Commission in Vanuatu honored Dorosday with the Hanson Mataskelekele Award for Women in Leadership. In her acceptance speech she was quoted as saying “Gender equality requires a different mindset. The journey to promote gender equality has been many years in the making. This award is not just for me it is for all women who are aspiring to take on leadership roles”.

The Centre and DLP are privileged to have worked alongside her to capture and publish some of her stories on the impact she made in the Vanuatu gender space. As we mourn the loss of this inspirational figure, we honor Dorosday Kenneth Watson's lasting legacy. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and the community she profoundly impacted.
