The La Trobe Leaders Program is a fantastic opportunity for you to develop your leadership skills by welcoming incoming students, mentoring your peers, and participating in a range of engagement activities held on campus throughout the semester.
Sophie is a La Trobe Leader, and Bachelor of Science student at our Melbourne (Bundoora) Campus. Sophie explains how La Trobe Leaders Program has positively impacted their time at La Trobe.
What are the benefits of participating in the La Trobe Leader’s Program?
I would say the heart of the program is the ability to gain experience that is transferrable into work and other areas of your life. Gaining confidence in yourself and your ability to communicate efficiently.
What has been your favourite part of the Leaders Program so far?
Honestly, being able to watch myself grow as a person and hearing from other people that I sound more confident, happy, and full of life. I’m someone who doesn’t have “active” or “outdoor” hobbies, so it’s been wonderful to experience and contribute to university life beyond studying and to see the effect that participating has had on me personally.
It’s a safe place to grow and learn, whilst gaining and applying real-world skills.
Sophie, La Trobe Leader and undergraduate student.
What would you say to people thinking about becoming a La Trobe Leader?
Do it. Don’t hesitate. I have generalised anxiety disorder and was extremely hesitant to join the program, and basically joined as a spur-of-the-moment attempt to go outside my comfort zone. Doing things like it can be scary, but I promise you, this program is for anyone and everyone. The staff and other volunteers in the program have been nothing but supportive and understanding.
If you want to bulk up your resume, gain confidence, social skills, and experience university life beyond your degree, this is absolutely the best place to start.
