At LaTrobe, we are committed to fostering a respectful, safe and inclusive learning and working environment for all students, staff, and visitors. As part of this work we are asking LaTrobe staff and students to take part in the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.
The campaign runs from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (International Human Rights Day), acknowledging the right of all people to live a life free from violence.
Respect Women: Call It Out
This year, we join with Respect Victoria to showcase their campaign, Respect Women: ‘Call It Out’ (Respect Is).
Over the next few weeks, we will raise awareness about the main gendered drivers of violence. These include:
- Rigid gender roles and stereotyped constructions of masculinity and femininity
- Control by men in decision-making and limits to women’s independence in public life and relationships
- Condoning of violence against women
- Male peer relations that emphasise aggression and disrespect towards women
Keep an eye out on My La Trobe’s blog and social media channels to learn more about what we can all do including how you can have important discussions around respect with those around you to further understanding, understand how toxic masculinity plays its part, learn how to safely call out disrespect, understand intersectionality and many more.
