What is the Nexus program?

If you’re looking to make a career switch to teaching and have a lasting impact, La Trobe’s Nexus supported degrees enable you to obtain your teaching qualification while learning the latest in best practice, building your professional network and gaining real-world experience.

With the Nexus program you’ll get practical classroom experience in a diverse range of metropolitan, regional, rural and remote schools. Plus, you’ll receive a paid salary, additional financial assistance and the reassurance of significant support and mentoring.

As a Nexus participant, you’ll graduate ready for the classroom – with 94% of graduates continuing to teach after graduating from the program.2

Check if you're eligible:

  • Passion for social justice.
  • Undergraduate degree in a non-teaching discipline with a WAM or GPA above 65% (mandatory).*
  • Knowledge in high-need areas: science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or other relevant disciplines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, resilience, and commitment to becoming a high-quality teacher.
  • Permanent residency or Australian citizenship (mandatory).

What courses offer the Nexus program?

This award-winning program1 is unique to La Trobe University and offered in our postgraduate initial teacher education (ITE) courses and undergraduate pathway Education courses, so you’ll graduate with a teaching qualification. The program is funded by the Commonwealth government, and supported by the Victorian and NSW governments.

    Master of Teaching (Primary)

    Combine knowledge, context and experience with theory and become a valuable primary teacher. You can specialise in areas like diagnostic learning, relationship skill building and special needs. Possible roles include:

    • primary school teacher
    • early childhood educator
    • special educator
    • community educator
    • non-traditional learning environment roles for advisory boards, government and private organisations

    Master of Teaching (Secondary)

    Learn about the diverse academic and developmental needs of young people, then design and teach the curriculum. Specialise in one double or two single-method teaching areas. Possible roles include:

    • secondary school teacher
    • community educator
    • non-traditional learning environment roles for advisory boards, government and private organisations

  • Part-time employment as a teacher aide in the first year.
  • Full-time employment as a paraprofessional with Permission to Teach in the second year.
