Living in Shepparton

Shepparton is a culturally diverse city lying at the heart of the Goulburn Valley. It offers a range of lifestyles, with urban centres and country towns all within 30 minutes' drive of the town.

Shepparton's great sporting and arts culture – and affordable and relaxed lifestyle – make it one of Victoria’s most liveable and accessible regional cities.

Location

Shepparton is a large regional centre in the Goulburn Valley at the heart of Victoria’s agricultural, manufacturing, transport hub and food bowl. Twenty-five per cent of Victoria’s agricultural production occurs in Greater Shepparton.

Culture

The town is renowned for its cultural diversity and the welcome it extends to new arrivals. It's home to more than 30 nationalities, who speak more than 50 languages, and more than 13 per cent of its population identify as being born in a country other than Australia. Shepparton has the largest Indigenous population in regional Victoria. Greater Shepparton also has a long history of migration settlement, dating back to World War I.

Economy

Shepparton is a developing town on the move. The recently opened new $70m Shepparton Law Courts form a regional headquarters for the Hume/Goulburn region.

Current developments are underway with Goulburn Valley Health’s $229.3m redevelopments to deliver new and expanded facilities and improve capacity for Hume and surrounding communities.

The Greater Shepparton Secondary College project has seen the merger of four government high schools into one modern secondary school.

Arts, culture and community

The Victorian Government awarded $23m to establish Munarra, a purpose-built Indigenous educational, sporting, cultural and community Centre of Excellence – where Aboriginal culture is embedded across all curriculum and programs.

The redevelopment of the $19m Greater Shepparton Regional Sports Precinct will stimulate interest and future growth in junior sports participation in our community.

The new $49.9m Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) development is due for completion in 2021 and will be an outstanding example of museum architecture, as well as an inspiring gathering place for our community.

La Trobe Shepparton sponsors the popular Shepparton Festival which provides the local community with engaging creative performances and workshops.

The Shepparton Theatre Arts Group, a non-professional theatre company, is part of a long tradition of dramatic arts in this region.
