Jaren | جڑیں | Roots | جذور will showcase works of artists from Asia, North Africa and Eastern Europe in a series of simultaneous exhibitions at La Trobe University, the Islamic Museum of Australia and Bundoora Homestead Art Centre (City of Darebin).
Curators said the selected artworks reflected an often-underrepresented sector of the diverse communities of artists that call or have called Australia home.
The artists share an interest in celebrating and challenging cultural contexts that shape their lived experiences, often expressing personal encounters and cultural histories, and how these have informed their beliefs.
Dr Karen Annett, Director of the La Trobe Art Institute, said the exhibition was made possible through the University's strong partnerships with Bundoora Homestead and the Islamic Museum of Australia.
"Jaren (roots), gives expression to our shared values that include strengthening cultural awareness and social inclusion through education, research and the arts,” Dr Annett said.
La Trobe Art Institute Curator Dr Jacqui Shelton said she was thrilled to assist in bringing works from three separate collections into dialogue.
"Across a wide range of mediums, works from the past 25 years express experiences of emigration and a celebration of cultural expression," Dr Shelton said.
Jaren | جڑیں | Roots | جذور will be shown at La Trobe University's Bundoora campus library from 7 February to July 12, at Bundoora Homestead Art Centre from 1 March to 24 May and at the Islamic Museum of Australia in Thornbury from 8 April to 12 July.
An opening event will be held at Bundoora Homestead Art Centre Saturday, 15 March, from 4pm to 6pm.
