Trans Day of Visibility on 31 March is an annual international celebration of trans pride and awareness, recognising trans and gender diverse experiences and achievements.
We celebrate sexual and gender diversity across our University. Staff and students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse, intersex, queer and asexual (LGBTIQA+) are active and integral members of the La Trobe community and we aim to provide support and services that enable them to bring their full selves to work and study every day.
ARCSHS and Rainbow Health
We are proud to be home to the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (ARCSHS) which conducts world-class research and education on the social dimensions of sexuality, gender, health and human relationships.
Located within ARCSHS is Rainbow Health Australia (previously known as Gay & Lesbian Health Victoria). This program supports lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer health and wellbeing through research and knowledge translation, training, resources, policy advice and service accreditation through the Rainbow Tick.
La Trobe’s commitment
At La Trobe, we recognise our positive duty to eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, relationship status and intersex status.
We care about the wellbeing of our staff and students. At La Trobe, we want you to feel safe, valued and supported.
For students, we have:
- dedicated LTU Queer counsellors
- a LGBTIQA+ resource hub
- Finding Pride, Bundoora campus, an 8-week Queer social support program
- LTSU Queer Collective, Bundoora campus
- Bendigo Rainbow Eagles
- Bendigo LTU LGBTIQA+ drop-in group on a Wednesday
We also acknowledge that there is always more to be done.
We encourage all staff and students to engage with Trans Day of Visibility on 31 March by accessing resources (via Transgender Victoria, ARCSHS and Rainbow Health) and by challenging their assumptions and ideas about gender identity.
We all have a role to play to ensure our working and learning environments remain safe and inclusive for all.
