Our diverse student community brings together individuals from all around the world and global events (no matter how far away) can affect anyone’s overall wellbeing. In challenging times, prioritising your mental health and wellbeing by accessing resources is essential to ensuring you feel supported, both during and after such events.
Free and confidential support is always available through Wellbeing Services, including counselling support and the Wellbeing Resource Hub.
When a world event is impacting you negatively, you may experience some of the below feelings:
- Feeling anxious, overwhelmed or fearful about the future
- Feeling disconnected from your support network and other students
- Not feeling motivated to study
- Feeling isolated
- Experiencing financial pressures
We want to make sure you have all the tools and support you need to keep on top of your studies during difficult times.
Here are some tips to help you manage your wellbeing and study successfully:
- Create a daily routine: Have designated times in your day/week that you study and stick to those the same way you would in-person. Use a schedule or calendar to map out what classes are on, when assignments are due, when you will have breaks and when you will study.
- Utilise the resources available: The La Trobe University Library is a great resource to help you stay organised and keep on top of your studies. You can access tools to plan your assessment, including the Assessment Planner, as well as connecting in with the Peer Learning Advisors.
- Reach out to your teachers: By making yourself known to lecturers and tutors at the start of the semester, you will feel more comfortable reaching out for support during the semester. Check your subject LMS pages for drop in and contact information for your lecturers and tutors.
- Connect with your peers: There’s a huge range of ways you can connect with your peers at La Trobe. Talk with your peers to find or create Facebook or Discord chat groups for your tutorial or subject or find like-minded people by joining (or starting!) a Student Club.
- Look after yourself: The better headspace you are in, the more engaged you will be in your studies. Visit the Health and Wellbeing Resource Hub for supports you can access and self-guided tools you can use to keep a healthy mind. You can access free and confidential counselling support through Wellbeing Serivces. Another option is the La Trobe Psychology Clinic, who provide affordable sessions (with provisionally registered psychologists) without the need for a referral.
More support:
If you need some further support or you just need to chat to someone, the Health and Wellbeing Centre provides a range of free support for students including counselling, accessibility support, financial counselling, legal support, LGBTIQ+ support and services and information on respectful relationships and sexual harm.
