The gap between the physical and digital worlds is getting smaller thanks to a unique digital platform developed by La Trobe Master of Computer Science/Information Technology student, Samet Alan (pictured above).
Alan’s project, Business Space Meet Technology (BSMT) Universe is designed to create an immersive virtual reality experience where users can interact with digital representations of themselves and others.
Alan explained that his platform could help students, by encouraging them to digitally engage with their campus and peers.
‘BSMT Universe ensures that students do not miss out on the campus experience whether studying online or face-to-face. By offering a digital representation of university campuses, students can virtually explore and engage with their educational environment.
‘Additionally, the platform provides opportunities for students to showcase their talents and potentially earn income, integrating their skills into the virtual space and enriching their academic experience.’
The platform is currently in the demonstration phase, and not ready for public release due to privacy concerns, but the project is proceeding within timelines.
‘I am currently focusing on researching intellectual property (IP) processes, which is a crucial aspect for the project’s success. Concurrently, the next phase involves integrating and testing virtual reality (VR) components,’ says Alan.
Alan also envisages far-reaching potential for his platform – far beyond that of a university campus setting.
‘The platform offers the ability to ‘revive’ loved ones, allowing users to interact through AI technology. My project provides a space where, after the loss of a loved one, you can still maintain a connection in a digital environment Alternatively, you could even engage in discussions with historical figures who inspire you.’

Alan says he had been able to leverage his course knowledge, and the culture at La Trobe to help him reach his goals – gaining both real world and virtual world experience along the way.

He said that he spent time researching La Trobe courses before enrolling in the Master of Computer Science/Information Technology, as this course aligned closely with his ambitions.
‘I initially focused on algorithmic logic through artificial intelligence courses and labs, followed by enhancing my skills in programming language. My excitement grew as I developed an AI game in my first semester with Python. I then gained experience in website development, SQL database management and network configuration.
‘In project management and entrepreneurship, I learned about teamwork, decision-making and start-up company in IT projects. My cybersecurity coursework highlighted the importance of protecting systems from future privacy threats, which deeply engaged me.
‘Currently, I am studying human-computer interaction, a subject directly related to my project and of significant interest to me. This course has been particularly relevant, complementing the other subjects I have undertaken as part of my project.’
Alan has also gained valuable experience by joining various La Trobe programs and events such as the Industry Mentoring Program.
‘I participated in the Industry Mentoring program, working with multiple mentors and I currently meet fortnightly with a mentor to further my development.
‘My involvement in Industry Based Learning and STEM projects provided valuable field experience and facilitated networking and collaboration.
‘I spent considerable time at the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Office, where I leveraged the team’s insights and opportunities. Notably, my team and I secured first place in PitchFest 2023, a pivotal achievement that enabled us to invest in and advance our platform.
‘I would like to once again appreciate the entire team in the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Office team for their support and guidance.’
This semester, I have decided to advance my project into PhD research. Should my application be accepted, and I secure a scholarship, my goal is to enhance the academic value of my project and make a meaningful contribution to the field
Alan said that ultimately, BSMT Universe was inspired by his pursuit of knowledge and happiness.
‘The inspiration for BSMT Universe originated from a deep-seated curiosity and a quest for freedom. It all began seven years ago when I first envisioned the project and began exploring its feasibility.
‘Throughout my life, I have pursued freedom and happiness, striving to align my work and environment with these values. My dedication to this pursuit also extended to academic research, where I studied the Happiness of Economy from 2017 to 2021. BSMT Universe is the culmination of these experiences.’
He plans to continue integrating his project work with his La Trobe studies, with his sights set on PhD research.
‘This semester, I have decided to advance my project into PhD research. Should my application be accepted, and I secure a scholarship, my goal is to enhance the academic value of my project and make a meaningful contribution to the field.
‘Building on the insights from my first master’s degree and my academic work on Happiness Economics, I am developing a framework for my platform that integrates these principles. My PhD research will focus on creating an interactive, user-centric experience that promotes happiness, high user satisfaction and personal wellbeing’.
