Counselling for men, what does it involve?

Many guys ask, “So what exactly is counselling?” Forget the stereotypes of lying on a couch and staring at the ceiling. Counselling can take many forms, depending on what you want and need.

“Therapy comes in so many shapes and sizes, but the exact shape that therapy takes is irrelevant if it provides a space where you can learn to better understand yourself, your strengths and what makes you tick. It’s about developing practical life skills for self-care.”

Dr Zac Seidler, Clinical Psychologist and Movember Director of Mental Health Training

At the Men’s Health and Wellbeing service at La Trobe Wellbeing, we get that. It’s not just how counselling happens, it’s what you want to get out of it.

Jason, our Men’s Wellbeing Counsellor at La Trobe, is trained in working with men and hearing what matters most to you – whether that’s managing stress, navigating a breakup or just wanting to feel better to achieve your goals. Our men’s wellbeing program and the counselling provided is for all male and male identifying students.

Your space. Your pace. Your version of support.

What’s it really like?

To help explain what’s involved, Movember’s five-part video series features men sharing their experiences with counselling. It’s a powerful resource that breaks down the stigma and makes it easier to take that first step.
