Alumni profile
Professor Jeff Brownrigg is one of the foremost exponents of Australia’s sound and culture.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) from La Trobe University, and is a member of the Class of 1970 - the first group of students to graduate from the university.
Being among the first group of students to attend La Trobe, Jeff had been witnessing the area develop from farming land to a university campus prior to its opening in 1967.
“I’d been coming past La Trobe and watching these green paddocks with black and white cows slowly turning into university buildings," he said.
"I thought ‘Well, wouldn’t it be nice to be a foundation student?’ To be the first in and to create traditions of various sorts and to have a hand in building a place was fabulous."
Jeff fondly remembers the relationships he formed with his lecturers at La Trobe, who have influenced how he has conducted his career.
"We were about the same age as some of the people teaching us, so we got on well and did an awful lot together.
“It made me became what I am. These things happen in an environment that encourages students to be students. It encourages close relationships … between staff and students."
